Digital artist: Han Hoogerbrugge

Han Hoogerbrugge

Hoogerbrugge is a Dutch digital artist who started out as a painter and cartoonist until discovering the internet in the mid-1990s. This background in comic art has informed much of his work, infusing it with a stylish, character-driven aesthetic.

His earliest online work, Modern Living\Neurotica was an extension of a comic strip that he started publishing in the late 1990s. Hoogerbrugge turned the well-worn genre of confessional comics where the artist is the main protagonist into a kind of abstract playground composed of a series of short animations.

Since then, Hoogerbrugge has developed a series of works that extend the comic medium into an online environment, incorporating animation and interactivity in order to help drive the narrative.

Hotel, produced between 2004 and 2006, is probably Hoogerbrugge’s most fullly realised work so far, combining multiple narratives in both comic and animated form to create a genuinely surreal environment that is full of surprises.
